Networgaming addressed with the business and fashion hub of the world, New York city’s mythical name, the Gotham Stakes is season’s prep to the more important and a million dollar race, the Wood Memorial and it also serves as an official prep race to none other than the Kentucky Derby. Slated for March 3rd, the race has upgraded its purse prize to $400,000 owing to the new gaming facilities like convention centre and casinos and a super impressive megaplex’ed Aqueduct Racetrack that would be showcased this season.
Race probables? Well the obvious starters first.
Hansen has finally confirmed his nomination for the Gotham Stakes now that the season has thrown upon it a greater contender than Union Rags, Algorithms who snatched the Holy Bull Stakes from right under his nose by a wide 5 lengths. Hansen was declared to be no match for the race winner. Seeing Algorithms in action on the 3rd would’ve added to the adrenalin gush but any news whatsoever on the Todd Pletcher colt threatening Hansen’s chances at the Gotham haven’t been declared.
Having already started twice this season in stakes races, Speightcity has failed to establish a firm ground for himself as a top class Derby nominee, however, his recent pick up from a fifth place finish in Count Fleet to second place in the Withers, both well behind race lead Alpha, bring him up as a potential upset. Would he in truth work up a similar miraculous victory as did Animal Kingdom last year? Well, we need to wait and watch.
Next we could possibly see Consortium from Godolphin Racing bandwagon starting in the Gotham Stakes while his stable mate Alpha would be targeting the more crucial Wood Memorial at palm Meadows. According to trainer K. McLaughlin, Alpha, most obviously a stronger contender for the Derby, would aim for Wood Memorial and the Florida Derby before hitting Churchill Downs. However, Consortium, who’s failed to nail a victory in any stakes race so far will start in Gothams to set the Darley silks flying.
Tiger Walk, third place finish from the Withers Stakes could also be listed as one of the final contenders for the $400,000 race. While his win ahead of How do I Win, a Todd Pletcher colt may seem like a fluke following his lack-lustre two year old racing season, surprises are always a welcome in stakes races, especially when it’s on the Derby Trail.
Pretension, a Christopher Grove trainee will also be seen starting in the Gotham Stakes as of now. Whether or not he stands a chance is a highly negatively answered question.
While Alpha and Algorithms have cleared the field for Hansen, Union Rags and a few others may be interested in fighting it out with the currently nominated candidates for the mile long race.
Spring will tell who had the nerves to win.
